Surface-mounted door closers
A surface-mounted closer fixes to the face of the door leaf with an arm running to the frame. It is the pattern to choose when the door is already hung, when you need to see and adjust the mechanism without taking the door apart, and when nothing about the opening requires the closer to be hidden.
When this is the right pattern
Fitting to an existing door. Nothing has to be routed into the leaf or the frame, so a surface-mounted closer goes onto a door that is already in service without taking it off its hinges.
Where the closer will need adjusting. Closing speed, latch speed and — on an adjustable-power model — the closing force are all reachable with a screwdriver while the door stays hung.
Where the budget or the schedule rules out machining the leaf. Concealed units need the door prepared for them; this pattern does not.
What decides which model
Leaf width first. Every model states a maximum door width, and it is the width of the leaf itself, not the frame opening. A closer on a leaf wider than its rating will not close reliably against a latch.
Then the leaf weight, and then whether the door is exposed. An external door, or one at the end of a draughty corridor, faces wind pressure that the catalogue figure does not account for, and that can move the choice up a power size.
Power size is the industry's shorthand for matching a closer to a leaf: the larger the number, the wider and heavier the door it is built to close. Picking the largest available is not the safe choice — an oversized closer makes a door unnecessarily hard to push open.
Arm options
Most of these models take a standard scissor arm. Several are available with a slide channel instead, which sits flatter against the frame and is usually chosen where the arm would otherwise be in the way or on show.
Where a model offers both, the specification on its page says so. If it does not say so, ask us rather than assuming.
