Measuring the width

1. 1Measure the leaf, edge to edge. Take the measurement across the door itself, from the hinge edge to the leading edge, at the widest point. Every maximum-width figure in our catalogue is a leaf width.
2. 2Do not measure the frame opening. The structural opening is wider than the leaf. Using it produces a figure that can push you a power size too high.
3. 3Measure each leaf of a pair separately. A double door is two doors. Each leaf gets its own closer, sized to that leaf.

Getting the weight

Weighing the leaf is the only way to know. If the door is off its hinges and you have a scale, that is the figure to use.

If it is already hung, an estimate from its dimensions and construction is normal practice and is what we will do for you. The three things that matter are the leaf's face area, its thickness, and what it is made of — a solid-core timber leaf, a hollow-core one and a glazed aluminium one of the same size are three very different weights.

The other two things worth telling us

• Whether the door is internal or external. External doors face wind pressure that no catalogue figure accounts for.
• How the door is used. A door cycled hundreds of times a day is a different specification from one used twice a day, even at the same size.
