Width and weight, then exposure

Start with the measured width of the leaf and its weight. Those two set the minimum the closer has to be rated for; everything else adjusts around them.

Then exposure. An entrance door, a door at the end of a corridor that acts as a wind tunnel, or a door into a stair core with a pressure difference across it, all need more closing force than their size alone suggests. Wind or a pressure difference across the opening can stop a correctly sized closer latching reliably, so if the door is exposed, tell us.

Traffic is the third factor. A door cycled hundreds of times a day wears its closer differently from one used twice, and our packaging states a tested minimum cycle count for the models that carry one.

Bigger is not safer

An oversized closer closes a light door hard and makes it heavy to push open. On a public building that is an accessibility problem.

An adjustable-power model is the usual answer where the right size is genuinely uncertain: the closing force is set on the unit rather than fixed at the factory, so one unit covers a span of door sizes and can be tuned on site.

The models our catalogue classification marks as heavy duty. This is a small set on purpose — it is what the catalogue actually says, not every model that could be used on a large door.
